It is a common thing to point at as the is the reason something didn’t happen. It is a flaw effortlessly pointed out. A glaring reason why a lot of us don’t live the life we want to live. It can be confused with laziness, but it is a different beast. It is procrastination. Often done in a seemingly innocent way, we convince ourselves not to do what can be done in that instant. In our hectic lives, we tend to focus on deadlines. Deadline motivation works at work but in life can slowly kill what could have been a beautiful life. Traveling, starting a business, working out, hanging with friends/family, don’t seem to have a due date. We tell ourselves it’s never too late. The “it’s never too late” thought process combined with deadline motivation will have you doing nothing until it’s too late. You wait until a health issue pops up or similar life changing event occurs and try to squeeze everything you talked yourself out of over the years or decades. It’s scary reading it but we live it with no issue.
I want to take the time to explain the difference between laziness and procrastination. Inactivity or not wanting to do something that should be done now versus delaying activity with the belief that something should be done but, you can do it later. If you are delaying, hopefully this is the beginning of your fight with a dangerous habit. I fall back into procrastination myself. It’s an ongoing fight because as stated before it is done in such an innocent way. You are telling and convincing yourself that you are going to do that thing you want to do… just not right now… most likely not tomorrow either but it will get done! You hear that and sign off on it like it comes with a 100% time-back guarantee if you don’t do it. It doesn’t. Even if you do it, you still don’t get the time you took to do it back. Crappy deal, right? Well, you are a hell of a salesperson when you are selling to yourself.

So, why do we put off things we want to do? It’s easy to point at money or stating you are too busy but those are not true. You can travel cheap these days. If your goal is a destination, get there as cheap as you can. Can you drive there? What about a carpool/group trip? How about flying one of the cheaper airlines? Staying in a cheaper hotel? Look up and price your trip like you are going. Now you know your number. Save up and get there. Too busy to do something you are putting off? How many hours a day are you just looking at your phone? There is an app for that if you want to scare yourself straight. You’ll have to look it up because no one paid me to mention them. 😊 If you decide to take a look, remember that is just your cell phone and doesn’t include the television. You cut that in half and you’d be surprised how not so busy you are you binge watching, Facebook/Instagraming, Youtube addicted, mobile/video gamer. Okay, I was talking to myself that sentence, but you know you are in there somewhere.
In closing, procrastination is a dream killer. It is the nicest hater you will ever encounter. It makes you feel good about being stagnant and is the culprit when you sit and think where the time went. I recently finished up my 4th music release in the past 9 months. (If you haven’t listened to my music click the music link on the left and make your way through or look me up on your favorite streaming site. Thanks -Drills) With this release, (Summer of 16s-Released July 1st) I was about a month ahead of schedule. I waited to mix and master because I had a whole month, right? Well, I finished June 29 @ 4am. I ran into a problem the night I was supposed to send my music to the streaming sites. It was not a great feeling and I deserved the stress because it was my fault. I kept putting off the last steps because the deadline was not close. I will never do it again. It is better for a task to be completed early than on the due date. I’m in music but this is with anything. Go on that trip. Start that side hustle. Jump. Do a crunch, plank. Call your people!
Food for thought…. you do the dishes!
