Last week, we discussed that thing you ignore or take for granted but you exhibit effortlessly. How do you take something you do well and become an expert? What are the necessary steps? What type of mindset is needed? What is needed is called the Mastery Mindset. The Mastery Mindset is the goal of mastering something. It’s pretty simple in writing but of course, if it was that simple there would be a lot more people exhibiting excellence in their fields. The work is in the preparation, action, and discipline. In addition, to these three, belief in one’s self is a prerequisite.
Understanding that with work you can get better. Understanding that mastery or perfection is an asymptote. You never reach it. Consider half-life of an element. Let’s create an element for you called a FLAW. Its half-life is a year. Every year of work/effort you put into your pursuit of mastery your element FLAW goes down by half. Quick math tells us you, I mean your element will go from 100% flawed to just 12.5% flawed in 3 years. (50% after year one, 25% after year two)
Are you a crazy person for creating a goal that cannot be attained? Yes and no. Yes, to attempt something that is not attainable is a little crazy. Most are already shunned away from very attainable goals. This does take a little bit of an unconventional approach or mindset. No, you haven’t completely lost your mind. Asymptotes don’t ever make it to the line they are approaching but do continuously get closer and closer as time passes. You are fine with never obtaining the title of master or reaching perfection.
You understand that you are reaching points that not many will ever reach. People who you believe are masters are working on their craft as if they’ve just been introduced to it. Imagine Bill Gates creating Windows 95 and being satisfied. Imagine Kobe Bryant/Micheal Jordan/LeBron James taking the summer off to relax after they’ve won a championship. Never and Never. With the Mastry Mindset, you don’t stop. You never stop and unlike athletes whose peak is 4-8 years max or a piece of software that will be obsolete in less than that, your peak can last multiple decades.

Everyone has their way of chasing mastery but here are a few ways that I believe can work for anyone. Remember what you love about what you are doing. Remember why you are doing it. Celebrate victories but put a limit on the time you give yourself. Mourn or sulk over failures if needed but you must put a cap on that also. The shorter the better. Unlike other elements, your elements decay stops if you do. Your goal may be to become the best but your discipline should be being the best at getting better. If you are the best at that, the chances of you becoming the best skyrocket. Muscle only grows when it fails. Embrace it.
In other words, you must push yourself to failure to get strong enough, smart enough, experienced enough for the next level. Be patient. Well, be as patient as you can be. I fight with this myself. This doesn’t mean sit and wait. This means some things are going to occur later than they should and you shouldn’t take that as a reflection of the work you are putting in. Know. Do. Live. Knowing is not only knowing what to do but doing what you know. Doing is applying to what you have learned. Living is the culmination of knowing and doing which leads to attaining results.
In closing, Mastery Mindset isn’t for everyone. You can absolutely be successful without striving for perfection or mastery. This is for the special few that want to do more than simply be a success. They want to be the best. They want multiple successes. Multiple accolades. If this is you, congratulations. You are one of a few. You also have a lot of work to do. You are chasing perfection knowing you’ll never catch it. From one crazy person to another, good luck.
