Rolling through the Storm

Rolling through the Storm

We’ve all been through at least one. It may or may not have been as big as you thought it was when you went through it but one thing is for sure and that is it was not small while you were in it. This storm is a period in life where it seems everything is going wrong and/or you have multiple issues coming at you. Issues that would have given you trouble if they came alone. Congratulations to the lucky few who have only been through one but most of us have weathered a few. We’ve likely been through more than we think because we tend to have to top the biggest storm to remember it. I’m sure you may have a story about the pain you felt after stubbing your toe but I can guarantee that story would leave your memory if you ever break it. There are absolutely “levels” to this.

As you are in your storm and the rain has you drenched, while the wind weaponizes it as it smacks you in the face and makes whatever you are using as an umbrella useless, you start to realize there is no hiding from it. You can collapse and ball up on the ground but that wouldn’t solve anything because these storms don’t stop when you stay still. They are special storms and they don’t go away until you grow enough, are strong enough, patient enough, smart enough to make it move otherwise you let it destroy most of what you have. If you fight, this makes what was once a storm seem like a drizzle with a couple of gusts of wind if it shows up again. Touching on the stubbing of your toe again, after the 3rd or 4th time you do it you react to it differently. Yes, it hurts but you know the pain will go away soon and you know once that occurs life goes on. There is no story. There is no asking why me? There is no feeling sorry for yourself. There is only “Yeah, that sucked. It hurt. It will suck and hurt the next time too but I’m alive and have things to do.” This is after you’ve been through similar or bigger issues. What about when you are currently in your biggest storm to date?

All of the knowledge above seems to be absent when you are in the (current) biggest storm of your life. You know it will not last forever. You know 9.5/10 you’ll get through it. You just think about that .5 a lot. That small chance just bothers you. No matter how unlikely it is you give it the life it shouldn’t have. You tell yourself the odds are slim but what are the odds of everything that is occurring in my life right now happening at the same time? Yes, this question and thoughts like it are justified but are they helpful? No. In the storm, you need to think and come up with a strategy to get out. You are getting beat up but you need to ignore it to allow yourself to be able to fight back. Consider it halftime. Yes, you are getting your tail kicked but the game isn’t over. You are in the locker room (your head) and will make adjustments and preparations for that monster of a storm you are fighting. Once you have figured it out, you snap out of that trance and walk through that storm as if nothing can touch you. Nothing can stop you. You’ve already thought about and solved the new problems it will give you along with the old ones it already gave. You have an answer for every question it throws you. Before you know it, you look around and see the ground is wet but the rain has stopped. The wind has calmed. You see the sun trying to peak out. You’ve won. You also have a hell of a new story to tell.

In closing, these things make us stronger. I’m not saying they are meant to make us stronger. I don’t believe that. I think they come to test us. You can pass or fail. If you pass, you get better overall. You may get a reward for making through. It can be monetary. A self-esteem boost. New stuff or maybe you simply get to keep the stuff you already have. It’s a small war. You can pass and still lose some things. You do need to know that you did weather the storm. You are now equipped to handle things you felt you couldn’t handle a fraction of. If you do fail and you lose some things, use that as motivation to get it back or get something even better. There will be other tests maybe even a retest if/when you get back to the level you were before failing or falling to the storm. Don’t allow yourself to keep failing. It may seem big and bad now but remember this storm will soon be equivalent to the last time you stubbed your toe. Yeah, that sucked. It hurt. It will suck and hurt the next time too but you’re alive and have things to do.

Food for thought…You do the dishes!
